This poem I wrote for a friend that lost his way a little, as we all do. Sometimes the world thrust challenges we don’t ask for upon us~   Sometimes we lose our way because we forget…who we are…or who we want to be.  In the end, we just need to be still…inside & out for a bit…and remember.  Have faith &  remember~~

Tracks in the Snow

You followed the tracks in the snow

under branches bowing your head

out to the clearing laid low

ankle-deep and faithfully so

you followed the tracks in the snow.

Without warning

they died down ahead,

your heart, in your chest, sinking like lead.

A tumbling, inescapable game~ of domino.

Where are the tracks, you said!

Where are my tracks in the snow?

Disappearing tracks in the snow?

Wondering now where to go?

Stand still for a minute and see…

The day leads to only where it can be.

This is where destiny has led

To an empty, unspoiled snow bed

Close your eyes now…

 Feel the falling fresh snow lick clean at your face.

Summon your innermost grace.

Stand resolute of the steps to be tread.

Newborn is the promise that lies up ahead.

For it is not the tracks you’ve misread,

but the footprints behind to retread,

not in what went right or wrong,

but to recall your sweet soul and integrity song.

Winter lasts only so long.

A New Day

On the clearest of days

Man was blue like the sky

Until fire and smoke

Filled his lungs and his eyes

A plane lead astray

In the heart of a city

Then three more targets

The world wept in pity

On the grayest of days

Man fled in scores

Down stairs and through windows

There were not enough doors

We watched as our centers

Of security fell

Crumbling upon us

In our hearts this will dwell

On the bloodiest of days

Man lost his mind

As he stared at the rubble

Our loved ones we must find

How one being of God

The planet will shake

I have a wild heart

Summer Unleashed

Spring rushed to see

A day within a day

Pushed its sapling buds

To burst beyond their say

Summer held on tight

Hoped to breathe its ripened bloom across the way

The sun still the same on my child’s cheeks as mine

ONE OF MY STEVIE NICKS INSPIRED CREATIONS: THE CHARMED HOUR PICTURE LOCKET NECKLACE

I have not had much time to post on my blog lately due to my good fortune of my art creations selling at a pace I have had to need to keep up with!  Let me just start this post by saying that if I am having a midlife crisis, this is the best darn midlife crisis anyone has ever dreamed up!  Five months ago I opened an online art store, started a creative frenzy of bringing to life what was floating around in my head.  Then I spent several grueling months trying to figure out how to advertise, which was taking all the bliss out of my creative tidalwave of activity!  I made a line of jewelry, then stationary, then started handpainting wineglasses…working for 10 hrs a day.  And I have to thank my parents and my Uncle and friends…but most especially my husband Brent,  who kept cheering me on, saying “dont stop…keep believing!”  My cousin Lisa was my first customer….ordering 18 wineglasses to get me started!!  I learned how to create an online store, and a blog with much error and days that I just wanted to cry with frustration, but I did it!  Darn it all, I did it!!  I wondered if everyone thought I was kooky, worried that I would fail,and  yearned to let go of those doubts with the same driving passion that I was creating with. 

Then something magical happened!  I started relaxing on facebook, making new friends all over the world, and I was amazed at the goodness I found in cyberspace.  I know alot of people think that facebook is a time drainer, but I don’t agree.  I think it brings us closer to others and makes us realize that we are truly all one people…and only good things can come from that!

Anyone who know me knows that I am a devoted Stevie Nicks fan!  Her poetic music and lyrics have always resonated with my soul.  When I opened myself up to joining several Stevie facebook groups, my whole world and business changed!  It all started with an invitation from a wonderful woman named Arlene Lewis to a private group, where  I met the most gracious, sweet women! (and men!)  Around the same time, I had designed a Stevie inspired wineglass for myself and done an oil pastel portrait of my muse as well.  I posted them on the site, just to venture out, with no expectations and my business in turn took off.  These wonderful women put my art store link in their news feeds without me asking, sent me orders and more compliments that my heart can probably contain!  They told me they cried when they received my art, and they said they were my biggest fans!  They encouraged me to put whimsical projects out there like top hats with brooches and feathers (which I will be doing soon!)  They were honest enough to tell me that my prices are too low….(and they may be, but right now I am searching mostly for coins of confidence in my bank roll

I cannot say what it has meant to me to be able to embrace my adoration for Stevie Nicks through these women. (and I should note there are many men in the groups…so thank you to my Sisters and Brothers of the Moon)!!  So thank you to Arlene, Robbin, Julie, Lisa, Jennifer, Alicia, Brooke, Diane, Joan, Kathy, Lily, Linda, Susan, Alan….and all my other Sister of the Moon facebook friends!  They have allowed me the comfort of embracing what I truly love and being able to express it in my artwork.  I should have known all along  (to quote Stevie) that this is where I would be able to “pick up the pieces and go home”  

 I have been blessed with wonderful family and friends…but now I also feel…when I look within…and assess (as we all do) who I am as an individual…I truly for the first time in my life…feel like I am home.

I have posted some photography that was taken by myself and my husband.  I found flowers to be the greatest subjects, they don’t move, and they always have a smile on their face!  So as we all await another blissful Springtime, may these photos stand in to warm your heart and day!

I’d like to show you the progression of the painting, Ive never taken pics of my work throughout, so this was interesting for me as well.  I used several photographs of him to get the look I was going for, which was mid career, 80′s Lindsey.  This below is my initial starting point, pretty basic and trying to get basic features, face shape etc.

Next I got some basic skin tones, and then did the eyes, which always makes it or breaks it for me.  Almost always I work for a couple hours, stand back, or walk away, then realize where I am careening off the mountain so to speak.  Its a slow process with portraits, every little detail, crease, line, shape matters when it is supposed to resemble someone. 

I realized here that the nose was ALL wrong, so it had to go!  This is what I like about acrylics vs. oil or pastels, they dry quick and can be painted over and over.  I also was in love with these eyes, but they were NOT Lindsey’s eyes at all.  I stood back and saw John Travolta or Rob Lowe (ha ha) and guess  what ….the eyes had to go after all that work!!!  I had to really let go of the jitters here, relax into the moment and once I found that place of being immersed into the photos I was working with it started to happen.  The thing I find is that the MORE you sit quietly with something the more you feel it, understand it , and in essance become it.

Next step, narrow those eyes up, make em smaller, less hair…”and in the web that is my own…I begin again” 

The eyes made a huge difference, though the brows and shadows arent right yet.  I also worked on the face shape, chin and hair to give it life. Once I started to see the resemblence, I actually felt a physical change in my body, a knowing…something that is the greatest of feelings!

The final face…shadow and highlites added.  The background done in purples and greens (very 80′s)  Select lyrics added.

You’ve come a LONG way baby!  Now how bout you  “Lay you down in the tall grass and let me do my stuffff!” 

All in all a fun project, with some frustrating moments for sure, but a challenge.  I am a meticulous painter, this probably took about 7 hrs over several days to complete.

What can I say!  I am humbled and grateful again!

 I am intrigued by the concept of taking something small and putting focus on it. In a poem.  In artwork.  In how we live.  There are so many miraculous aspects to life that we pass by in our “busyness” each day.    So many small gestures.  So many tiny signs.  Whispers.  Are you taking the time to recognize them. 

Try this.  Make a list of all the caressing whispers you received and took in this week.  Here’s mine:

* A friend brought me flowers just because. Every time  I looked at them this week, I felt grateful for our friendship.

*My son got in a little trouble (he’s 12) for talking back and instead of being really upset with him , I made him write a list of 50 things he loves about me.  He did a fine job, we had a giggle with some of his answers, but in the end it brought us closer.

* My husband and I were invited to the home of some new friends for the first time, and they had slippers ready for us to be comfy at their house.  We ended up staying 7 hours and chatting the nite away.

*I suggested a new online friend listen to some music I love, he did, and sent me genuine thanks for introducing him to it.

There is nothing like an art project that restores something to new life.   It’s like taking an old soul, and validating its worth.

This is a mural project I completed for a sunroom.  The frame was an antique piece that was bought at an auction, the owner said it was part of a bar at one time, and maybe had mirrors in the cut outs.  She was a lover of the sea and lighthouses and had done quite a bit of traveling and asked if I could do a mural as if she were looking through a window out at the ocean.  She gave me the keys to her house, a stack of her travel pictures, free reign, and went out of town for a week.

When she came home she found this…..

This lighthouse was her favorite that she had visited, I wish I could remember where it was now.  I tried to mimic the little houses at the base as in her photo.

This white house below was a Bed and Breakfast she had stayed at with some very close friends and had very fond memories of.

I added a gloss medium to the acrylic paint and the water coloration had this perfect dreamy sheen to it.

I just wrote this poem tonite, looking at a greeting card I found in a gift shop and framed because I love it so much.  The card shows a woman in a long flowing gown, suspended mid air out amongst the trees, face to the sky, arm outstretched in a pose of resurrection, no persons necassary for her journey but herself.

Don’t we all want to know our own resurrection, fully…and completely. 

Revival

 This is actually a walk out basement with lots of windows to the right and double doors that lead out to our inground pool area. We did most of the work redoing this area ourselves.  We painted the ceiling, floor and walls, and as you can see I like to write quotes I love right on the wall when the mood strikes me. This is a big room, on the other side my husband has his amps and guitars and my son has his drums, and they come down and jam while I work.  It’s a great way for us all to be together and do something creative as a family.  Sometimes I can get my son to sit and paint with me.  Its great to have this seperate space to  leave everything out and walk away when I’m done.

I cry because the feedback I get on my blog from fellow artists, and writers lifts me up, gives me a venue and support system  for my work that publication never could.  I cry because I talked to people who lived thousands of miles from me this week, and felt a human connection regardless of the distance. I cry because I am still chasing my dream to live an artful, inspirational, genuine life after all these years, I have never given up, and when something I write on my blog touches someone, my heart just expands as big as the sky we all live under.  I cry because I feel so alive.  And to quote Jason Mraz again, “Live High, Live Mighty, Live Righteously”   In my interpretation, do what makes you happy, do it big, and do it geniunely with a full heart, good intentions, and love, love, love for yourself.

This is the Vermeer oil painting (1165-1667) called Girl With A Pearl Earring.  See the resemblence and striking nod to this work in the modern work (digital photography) 2 posts after this one?  The thing about art is that nothing is really new.  We all, as artists have these images in our heads that sit and stew there, that touch us profoundly, and we recreate them in our own time, in our own chosen medium.  We are never isolated as human beings, we are always interconnected, cycling through life together.  I dont know how other artists feel about this recreation, but personally I welcome it, for the new artist it is a means of feeling inspired, and for the seasoned artist they are able to take one person’s work and create it anew, with a fresh voice for its time, thereby inspiring onward.  And the cycle continues….

I am in awe of this young singer songwriter.  He is a true artist.  A geniune person who cares about the people and world he lives in.  In a sea of copycats and glossy molded images , he is an original.  A voice for this generation.  It’s all about the words he says.  Yes.  Yes it is.  What word did you expose yourself to today via television, newspapers, magazines?  Were they nutrients for your soul?  What words did you think in your mind?  Did they build you up, further your dreams?  What words did you say to others?  Did they inspire them, soothe them, leave them feeling loved?  It’s ALL about the words…and if they leave you feeling free..finally free. I so agree with this quote by one of my favorite artists.  When you love someone and sit in the moment with them, look them in the eye, listen to them without thinking about what you are going to say next, you are creating the most beautiful art there is…the relationship.  Maybe you didnt have time to sit down and paint today.  Maybe you wanted to crochet, or play guitar, or make a new piece of jewelry.  You had a great idea for a new piece of pottery, or metal sculpture.  Instead you had to go to a soceer game, take a loved one to the doctor, help with homework, or deal with a family crisis.  It’s okay.  Dont worry.  Did you hold someones hand?  Lend an ear to a friend that lost a job or pet?  Then you created art.  You gave of yourself.  Expressed yourself.  Your kind soul was your art today.  Believe it or not , that’s better than Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers”…and I bet even he would say so.  Wouldn’t you Vincent?

Made these handpainted, custom glasses over the weekend.  They say Hors d’oeuvres and Vin(Wine)  on the front, have a golden Eiffel tower on the back and are embellished with rhinestones and black buttons that just make them sparkle.  I have never been to Paris or France, but for some reason have a strong affection for all things French.  Most likely the allure is the idea of romance and twinklin white lights, baguettes and french croissants.  I just want to put on a draping scarf and walk the streets at nite, drive through the rolling provencial countryside during the day.  Maybe someday….and I will definitely have a side of wine with all that romance!  Availabe at my Etsy store: http://www.dreamalittledesigns.etsy.com

Eckart Tolle is one of my favorite writers because he has been able to make me look at things in ways that I never did before.  These words of his from A New Earth remind me of when I painted the mural below.  It was the first mural I painted when I started my mural business, so you can only imagine how nervous I was. When I arrived to start the client had said he wanted to watch me paint the ENTIRE mural.  And he did.  He took several days off work and he sat on the floor with me for 5 days and watched me paint for 4-5 hrs at a time!  At first I was terrified at the thought, but at one point he said to me, “I hope you dont mind that I asked to do this, its just that its so exciting to me to watch the process, to be a part of it.”  That changed my whole attitude immediately.  I just fell into the present moment of painting, and we did talk off and on, and share a laugh or story, so I was aware of his presence, but there were long pauses that we did not talk, that I was in my own blissful moment , as I believe he was.   I was very at ease all of a sudden because I realized that it was an incredible thing that he cared and had that much enthusiasm not just about the finished product, but about the creative process.  The process itself, and our human connection, literally became part of the art.  And so, again I say, forget about the end product, it doenst even exist until you get there, just enjoy the now moment of creation.

The following is a poem, or extended verse that I wrote on my 40th birthday.  I wanted to do something to mark the day and acknowledge what I had lived and learned up to that point in my life.  The simple truth is that the most important and blissful things I have created is the relationship with myself and the relationships with the people I love.  Your life is art in motion.  If you create nothing else, take a look around…there is your Picasso right in front of you.

All It Is Really Meant To Be

A life is really nothing but a dream

A moving sculpture molded by its maker

We all want to be something we can show to someone else

This is me, this is what I have, is only lifeless clay

Etch gratitude, be what love would do, if you asked it for its say.

I have shaped mistakes, painted worries across sleepless nights

Carved with questions, sliced with judgment,

Loved too hard, like marble veined with forgiveness forgotten,

All in hopes of setting my inner ghosts free

Yet I only had to do one simple thing, to accept, as a gift, what could be given to me.

Over and over, creating a collage, a face for myself, marveling at the person I didn’t see

Hunting for purpose and worth as a requisite pedestal to my figurine

When in truth, I am boundless, not meant to be defined by what I do

For the beauty that is all of us, is there in the first infantile tears

Nothing to be done to make it more of something, in the passing years.

And oh my friends have granted me such a delightful lead

To bring my own bliss is the only meaning of life that I have come to need.

Now I come to stand in the middle of a forked and darkened road

Illuminated with the peace of looking neither forward nor back

It is the still moment that pulses so real, so loud, that I could cry out

Drop to my knees, breathless with God in the knowing that my meaning is well-found

In the here, in the now of everyone I have loved, it is bound.

I’m halfway to heaven, awareness finally coming crystal to me

That even though I have grieved my losses with quiet enormity

Still I ride in, cushioned on the wings of my circle of tender angels

I have loved and been loved, these are the brushstrokes of a life lived fortunately

This quote reminds me to live in the moment of what I am creating.  Too often we project to all the things that can go wrong, or how we could do something better, or how it doesn’t compare to someone else’s art. We wonder if we can sell it, how will we go about doing that, will anyone even care.   Or we worry about the past.  Why can’t I write a paragraph as good as that one I wrote last week.  Why aren’t the words coming like they used to? etc etc.

The point is to get the full effect of any creative project, we need to stay in the creative moment.  Ignore those pesky thoughts of doubt and fear. Revel in the process.   Get lost in it.   Become it.  Let your only purpose be to express yourself, to keep climbing.   Have tunnel vision…and then see what happens. 

I bet when your all done…you will then step back  see yourself  in the flesh and say, “Wow, I did that.”  If I can do that, I can do anything.

I wrote this poem as a graduation gift to my daughter.  When I sat down to write it, my first instinct was to give her advice for the life she had ahead of her.  But when it came down to sitting in the moment  a bit before I started , I realized that what  I wanted to say was very simple.  I just wanted her know how much I loved her.  I wanted her to know that she had given me , as much, or more than I had even given her.

 Overcome With You

 Your beautiful face.  Your exquisite face. I would wrap them in velvet, tie them in lace— if there were words that could explain how I have adored your beautiful face.

 How does a mother tell her only daughter, that over the years, it was the unadorned looks on her picturesque face that have elevated me, and burst me wide open, and saved me all at the same time.  I can go to Paris, or Rome—to the moon, or even to a place named heaven, but your face is my home.  My beloved home.

 You have always been a sweet, sweet child. When they placed you in my young arms, your cerulean eyes reflected a galaxy of truth, an ancient knowing, and I knew that you were here for me, not I for you.  And though I gave you life, you gave me more.

 You gave me laughter that floored me, and the bliss of your little sing-song voice.  I was born again, inside the sun, every time I saw you dance, and chatter on.  I was a bow of colors every time your face lit up on whatever field of dreams you were twirling on at the time.

 I saw you.  I saw you when something or someone broke your heart, and I hid the tornado that swelled in my soul.  I have cried on the inside for every injustice I wish you never had to bear, for every wound I know you will bear.  I held your hand, and hid my fears from you, so that you could learn to rise again. 

 And look how you have risen!   You are a woman of strength, who knows her place is any mountain peak of choice.  You let your righteous character, and quiet confidence be the path you walk along.   You are your beliefs.   You impart and know the precious things in life— an immense heart, a wide open mind, a crazy joy that sweeps a room to its feet.

 I hope that I have shaded you just enough, watered you just so, that you might grow into your destiny.    But know one thing.  I have loved you with a raging love, a mother’s love, a love that has no bounds.

I will love you, through time and back again.  So come to me.  Come to me when you have fallen, I promise that I will nudge you, feet up to the ground. 

 Soar.  Take to the air.  I will say.   Today is your day.   

Sit inside yourself awhile every chance you get, there you will find the gracious God that gave you to me. There you will find the stillness of accepting the moment you are in, is all that there is supposed to be.

 My beautiful daughter. So I wait.  So I wait to see, where you will go, who you will still be.   I could linger in the simplicities of your face forever; still I tremble at the imagining of how your life has yet to stun me.

This is a photograph of my daughter and an oil painting that I did for her of John Lennon.  She fell head over heels for Mr Lennon and his music and message in her senior year of highschool. 

I had been in Key West the previous year and seen these really fantastic paintings in a gallery that used bright, neon colors. I stored that in my memory as something to try one day.  Then I came across some cool photos of him that had dark and light values.  I knew that I wanted to put some of his words from various songs on the painting that would inspire her well into her life.  Combining all of these ideas I came up with this painting, and the concept of one side being in shadow, the words/lyrics floating from the depths of his mind, all set in swirls of creativity all around him. 

The last line on the painting is from a song he wrote for his son.  It says, “I can hardly wait to see what you become.”  Isnt that the greatest line, filled with so much anticipation and love and pride.  I also had these words put on her graduation cake.

This is actually the first oil painting I ever attempted, and I used ONE brush to complete the whole painting.  I was so engrossed in this project for hours at a time.  I would look up and it had seem like no time had passed.  Bliss.  I was in a state of bliss.  If you have done oil painting you know that it is quite challenging, the colors dont dry for weeks and it is near impossible to blend or go over paint once it is down.  Still, I was ecstatic at how it came out.  

I truly believe that it came so wonderful on my first try with this medium because I knew I was doing it for her.  The love that I felt for her just poured onto the canvas.  When I got to the part of putting the lyrics on the canvas, I had a surreal experience.  At risk of sounding odd, I will just say that I had a sense of complete peace, and a feeling of Mr Lennon’s presence. 

Christmas morning brought many tears when the gift was received.  We propped the painting up on the buffet in the dining room, and as I like to say…that Christmas, we ate dinner with John Lennon.

This picture was taken at the Botanical Gardens in Cleavland.  Its a small, compact little wonderland of a garden there right in the heart of downtown. When I found the quote above I just ooohed and aaaahed over it immediately.  It is one that will stay with me forever. Like the Cleavland Botanical Gardens it is compact, but packs quite a punch.  Certain quotes just resonate with each of us, but I am very drawn to quotes about the creative process and not just the artistic, creative process, but the creative process of shaping our lives. 

As humans, we are like that seed…wet, green, new… and so small in a big world.  Yet inside that seed is the full potential of who we can be, or really who we truly already are if we listen to ourselves.  The earth is surely vast and dark, and we the little seeds vibrate in the depths of it, ready to explode up and through, into being. 

What is your passion?  Your dreams? 

Are you making time for them?  Are you planting yourself so as to get to where you want to be?  Are you taking the space each day to cease “doing” and just “be”?  Start slowing down, sitting quietly, journaling or anything else that will help you turn you seed over in your hand.  Once you know what it is, plant it deep in the soil of your life…nurture it calmly, patiently with small steps. Then watch it grow…”wild in the hot, blind earth.”

I like to create items that speak to who I am, regardless of what other people will think.  The first time I wore this out, I had four women come up to me in an hour.  They were pawing at it they were so excited.  So I thought, hmmmm, there are a few gypsy-hearted birds out there like me, just waiting to leave their nests.  Message: Never fail to be who you are.  People covet and flock to passion.

We took this picture in wine country with a timer setting and a Kodak camera.  No editing, the sky was that fantastic looking.  He ran in the picture, we kissed and voila…art.  Well to me its art…when I look back on the years, and the refined carving that went into the sculpture we have become.

As an artist, I was thrilled with the whole of the project.  The horse had such a realism in his eyes, the texture of the apple blossom tree, the tree trunk, the fence…all came out of me with such ease.  As all artists know, this is not always the case.

This picket fence section was done on the other side of the room, and would be aside a dresser eventually.  I let the child pick the bunny she wanted out of a animal book.  She just thought that was the greatest thing ever!  Children make the best clients…they are so open, so grateful, so in awe of life.

There is something about paint for me that is completely meditative.  It can be a huge mural, or a basic wall…an oil painting, or the tiny details on the base of this glassware…I just get so lost in the feeling of the wet paint gliding on the surface.  I can feel myself breathing differently, and just flowing into the work as if I’m one with it.  I find myself not needing to “think” about the work, and just let it flow out of me.  I tell myself, “its just paint, if it doesnt work you just paint over it” Now I think that is a pretty good philosophy for life too.  Surrender to the project, to the day, to the moment in front of you.  Surrender all fears, projections and expectations and just flow.  I know my most blissful moments have come out of this kind of surrender.  Have I tried to achieve it with wine too?  Sure.  Has it been as great a high as art….ummm..no.  But if the answer is yes for you…then order yourself a pair of these glasses, grab a bottle of Merlot, and live vicariously through me.

When I came across this fabric trim, my wheels started turning to turn it into a jewelry item.  The red is so vibrant, it reminds me of rubies, and the reddest lipstick.  There is nothing like the power of color to uplift you and change your mood.   I plan on wearing this one to a holiday party with a black and white zebra top, and a black pencil skirt, and yellow pumps embellished with more jewels and pearls!  Real roses don’t last that long, so why not wear them on your wrist.  The back of this piece is embellished with a black grosgrain ribbon…very French…oh la la!

This is soooo comfy and light on!  I think two of these at the end of a blouse of sweater would look so yummy and unique, and is a great way to add to your wardrobe and create versatility.
